Value, and a clear title that matches the car.
If you are really interested in one particular vehicle, check the title. Is it clear? Is it in the name of person selling it? Does the VIN on the title match the VIN on the vehicle?
Then you have your mechanic look at it to evaluate its road worthiness. If it passes both those checks, and the price is right, buy it, put insurance on it, transfer the title into your name, and enjoy your car.
First I am confused you are helping someone that is buying a used car and you need help to help them? Look into price, value, condition, if it needs repairs, etc. Take it to a mechanic before buying it and have it checked this will tell you if there are issues you should know about. Second use kbb. to find the retail value and trade-in value. Pay as close to trade-in as possible and never over retail. Also run a CARFAX report before you buy to make sure it has not been totaled etc.
